Meet the Team

SCI Miami Chapter is served by a Board of Directors elected by the general membership. The four officers are in turn elected by the Board of Directors from among their ranks. Those who are elected to serve in any position on the Board, including the officers, do so purely on a voluntary basis and are not paid for their services as such. The Board of Directors listens to the wishes of the general membership and sees to it that the Chapter accomplishes the conservation, educational, and humanitarian programs members expect from the Chapter, while also assuring that the Chapter members have many opportunities to meet and socialize over the course of the year with socials and a yearly SCI Miami Chapter Hunter's Expo.

Barbara Crown- President

Barbara Crown has been a member of SCI for 20 years and was among the founding members of SCI Miami. She previously served on the board of directors for seven years, and returned to serve on the board again five years ago. She has previously held the offices of Secretary and Vice President, and has participated on the events committee, publications committee and fundraiser committee.

Barbara has been a hunting enthusiast for more than 25 years and has hunted in the US, Latin America, Africa and Europe. As the editor of The Hunting Report Newsletter she has visited and conducted site reviews of hunting operations in Arizona, Alaska, Sonora, La Pampa, South Africa, Namibia, Tanzania, Mozambique, Uganda and Croatia. Working at The Hunting Report she reports on hunting news and developments and reviews hunting opportunities around the globe, helping hunters find hunts of a lifetime and exposing unethical operators.

“Being on the forefront of the news, I know how hunters and the conservation programs we fund are under attack throughout the world,” Barbara says. “If we want to save our hunting rights and traditions and conserve wild places and animals, we must become a united force for the sustainable use of widlife. Together we can fight anti-hunting legislation, educate the public on how hunting supports conservation and give people who live with wildlife the incentive to conserve it. That is why I support SCI with my time and resources.”

Jesus Hill

Jesus "Vico" Hill has been a member of SCI since the Miami chapter was founded in 1997 and has served on Miami’s board of directors for approximately 12 years. He is a past president, has served as vice president, and was fundraising chairman for eight years.

Vico began hunting more than 35 years ago. He has hunted in Africa but says his true passion is chasing after whitetail deer in Illinois.

"Hunting and the outdoors is a lifestyle I have pursued since a very early age. It is more than a choice - it runs through my veins like a four-alarm fire," he says.

Jonathan Horowitz - Treasurer

Jonathan started hunting only about five to six years ago and quickly became a fully-committed SCI member. “We have the unique privilege as Americans to have access to millions of acres of public lands in this country, and I want to be part of an organization that ensures that continues for generations to come,” he says of his passion for hunting and SCI’s mission.

Father-in-law and fellow board member Carlos Donate introduced Jonathan to hunting, launching his pursuit of game across the continental US and South Africa. “He has provided the inspiration for my future hunting goals,” Jonathan says in appreciation.

While he became a member of SCI Miami just four years ago, Jonathan has been deeply involved with the chapter from the beginning. He started by volunteering to head our membership committee. He has served as a dedicated board member for the last two years, serving as Chairman of our annual fundraiser and recently took on the responsibilities of Treasurer. He has also volunteered his time to assist with several humanitarian projects sponsored by SCI Miami.

“My focus is to maximize our membership experience throughout the year and at our annual expo so we can make a difference in the future of hunting.”

Carlos Donate - Membership Chair

A member of SCI for 19 years, Carlos has served on SCI Miami’s Board of Directors for 18. He has worked on various committees throughout the years, especially the alternative weapons and publication committees. Carlos has been instrumental in bringing new members to the chapter. “It’s very satisfying to bring together new and experienced hunters to share and support the cause for the adventure, the sport and the hunt,” says Carlos. “Through SCI, I have been fortunate to make many friends for life.”

Introduced to hunting at age 12 by his uncle Humberto Armada, Carlos says hunting is in his blood. “Somehow, I happen to do something hunting-related every day,” he says. He is proud to have passed that on to his family too. “I met my wife Milly on a hunting trip. Married 40 years now, she understands my love for family and the outdoors. I am honored to see my children involved in SCI too.”

Asked what his favorite style of hunting is, he says, “Hunting behind dogs - whether for upland game, waterfowl, or to chase fur - will always hold a special place in my heart.”

Carlos has hunted across the United States and in other countries, including South Africa. He has hunted numerous species and says all offer unforgettable adventures. “I really admire wildlife,” he says. “All the different animals, the way each one is structured – the way feathers lay out on a bird, how a whitetail walks through the woods, the build on a bear, or how a wild cat slinks to hunt its prey. How they can survive in their different habitat, and how they adapt all amazes me.”

“The SCI mission to support hunting through conservation is the backbone to our sport,” he says when asked why he has been committed to the organization for so many years. “My biggest support is for SCI MIAMI CHAPTER. Our club of 20 years young tells all hunters around the world that a city composed of so many different cultures has its share of hunters who have acquired the highest achievements in our sport.”

Carlos has been in the printing industry for almost 50 years and the sole owner of the print shop Gator Graphics for 28 years. A quick print shop capable of printing from stationary to full color catalogs and brochures, Gator Graphics also has its own screen printing and embroidery department. Carlos has donated many services to SCI Miami over the years, and he offers discounts to all SCI members on his services. “Free enterprise is a wonderful thing!” he says.

Scott Allen - Secretary

Justin Reay

Justin has been an SCI member for 4 years and jumped onto the SCI Miami board immediately. He has just started his second term, taking on the challenging tasks of the fundraising committee. Justin is a lifetime hunter. “I started hunting and fishing as soon as I could walk with my family in Ohio and Canada,” he says. Hunting and the outdoors are simply part of life to Justin.

Justin decided to invest time and effort in SCI’s mission because, “I believe there are many similar minded folks, and as a well-organized group with a focused agenda, we can accomplish much more than we ever could as individuals alone.”

Jose Caraballo

Jose has been a member of SCI Miami since the chapter was founded in 1997, Jose is serving his first term on our Board of Directors. Jose started hunting in the Florida Everglades with his Dad and uncle in 1965 at the age of 15 and has remained an avid hunter. He has traveled North America pursuing whitetail deer, mule deer, axis deer, pronghorn, bobcat, javelina, hogs, black bear, mountain lion, elk and other small game. His wife, son and daughter are also hunters and often accompany him on his adventures.

Jose is a strong advocate of introducing youth to hunting. “I take pride teaching young people and new comers to our sport,” he says. “It’s very satisfying to help a young person harvest their first deer, and over the years I have been blessed to enjoy the amazement of numerous first-time hunters.”

Why is Jose involved in SCI? “I support SCI because we need to keep this amazing sport alive. It is important that every hunter support the organization that protects our right to hunt.”

Osvaldo De Armas

A member of SCI for more than 10 years, Osvaldo joined the SCI Miami Board of Directors in June 2017 and is assisting with our membership committee. Longtime residents of Miami will laugh when Osvaldo says he started hunting with his father and friends in the tomato fields of Kendall! “I have been lucky to hunt in 10 different states and twice in Africa...so far,” he says. He is proud to pass on the hunting tradition to his daughter. “At the age of 14, she got interested in hunting has been hunting with me ever since,” he says.

Osvaldo is a life member of both SCI and the NRA. He is dedicated to SCI because, “SCI conservation and education projects are essential to the preservation and understanding of our love and respect for the animals, environment and sport.” A retired Environmental Health & Safety Specialist, Osvaldo says he has plenty of time now to “find a good place to hunt!”
